5 Tips For Choosing the Perfect Domain Name for a Personal Blog

Published on

People, for one reason or the other, start a personal blog. This is common mostly among renown people, celebrities or any other form of public figures. But not just celebrities, even ordinary people start up their own personal blogs. Now, that brings us to the question “what’s the perfect domain name for a personal blog?”

1. Be real

Starting up a personal blog is an avenue for you to showcase your unique personality, so the domain name of your personal blog must not be a fictional name. I know the temptation may arise, especially if your name doesn’t sound too pretty. Trust me, your fans would love even your name once they fall in love with your writeup.

However, you could use a fictional name if your blog centers around comic or comedy. Else, most people will assume you are trying to pretend to be who you’re not in order to gain some sort of advantage.

2. Keep it short

You will need to choose a perfect domain name for your personal blog that describes your personality, but this can be a daunting task, especially if your full name is a well recognized one like mine. I can imagine over a thousand people with this same name combination “Matthew Stephen” (already met a bunch on Facebook).

Now this brings me to the temptation of adding my middle name, which will end up making the domain name extremely long. Instead of choosing a very long domain name, try to keep it short by using abbreviations that are easy to remember.

3. Keep it simple

If one of your names is a hard one to remember, you could use abbreviations to replace that hard name. Your domain name must not give people a hard time typing on their phones or computers or remembering the spellings, except of course you are a popular figure (speaking of popular figures; I still forget how to spell Zuckerberg sometimes).

4. No strange characters

Most people with popular firstnamesurname.com would most likely be unavailable, now picking a firstname-surname.com becomes an option if available. This becomes extremely difficult to communicate verbally with other people. If your domain names include numbers or other characters, people may assume them to be in words. This may cost you a lot of visits to your blog.

5. Make sure the name is not copyrighted

Try avoiding a name that can get you into legal issues. Imagine using the full name of a past president because it’s available. It could be cool at first, but in the end… when your website starts generating a lot of traffic, it could backfire.
