Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria — popularly known as ABU Zaria — is one of the oldest universities in Nigeria. It was founded in 1961 and began full operation in 1962.
In 1962, ABU had just four faculties: Agriculture, Engineering, Law and Sciences. And under those faculties, there were 15 academic departments (or courses, as some people prefer to call them.
The first vice-chancellor of ABU Zaria was Norman Alexander; he held that position from 1961 to 1966. After him, many others have held that position and contributed in one way or the other to the height ABU Zaria has attained right now.
At the moment, ABU Zaria has eighty-two (82) Academic Departments (or courses as some prefer to call it), twelve (12) Faculties, and twelve (12) Research Institutes and Specialized Centres.
