Google AdSense Auto Ads Review: How it Works And Best Practices

Published on

Recently, Google AdSense announced the introduction of auto ads on the AdSense blog. Many AdSense publishers have yet to understand what it is all about and how it works. We’ve made our own research, and offer this review to better clarify everything you need to know.

As we all know, Google AdSense is the biggest contextual advertisement company in the world. In terms of popularity, innovation, and user-friendliness, AdSense stands out by a thousand miles. A proof of their knack for making innovative moves is the recently announced auto ads.

AdSense auto ads is good news for people who have relied on 3rd party services to manage their ads. With the AdSense auto ads enabled, you don’t have to do that anymore.

Additionally, you won’t have to worry about infringing on AdSense ads placement policy. AdSense uses machine learning to control the ads on your page automatically.

I first tried out auto ads on this blog for a couple of weeks before enabling it on my other blogs that use AdSense.

Here are what AdSense promised are the benefits of using auto ads:

  • Optimization: Auto ads will leverage machine learning to show ads only when they are likely to perform well and provide a good user experience.
  • Revenue opportunities: Auto ads will identify any available ad space and place new ads there, potentially increasing your revenue.
  • Easy to use: With Auto ads, you only need to place the ad code on your pages once. When you’re ready to use new features and ad formats, simply turn them on and off in the AdSense dashboard; no need to change the code again.

However, those are only promises. Knowing how it works requires that you test it yourself. Most bloggers/webmasters are usually not very much inclined to playing around with ads placements.

But if you really want to take your revenue to its peak, it’s never a bad idea to do so. I’m kind of a fan of experiments. As soon as I learned of auto ads, I quickly enabled it on one of my blogs.

My AdSense auto ads review

After testing auto ads on my blogs, I have been able to draw conclusions as to how it works and I’ll be sharing that information with you.

Now, let’s analyze all what AdSense outlined as the benefits of auto ads and how far they’ve been fulfilled:

Optimization

I’m quite impressed with the optimization. I love the way the ads appear on mobile devices especially. No need for performing extra coding or hiring experts.

Auto Ads works with the length and keywords of your blog posts. Some of my articles that are over 2000 words usually have as much as 6 in-article ads, one ad above the fold and another ad just below the post body.

Personally, I wouldn’t have added so many in-article ads, I prefer ads placed in blog sidebars and above the fold; since, in my opinion, visitors may find in-article ads disturbing.

That’s just my own opinion though. Above the fold and in-article ads have been recorded to have the highest click-through rates. Pretty much the reason, I believe, you will find more in-article ads than any other ads format in auto ads enabled blogs.

Not too many people will turn to your sidebar when they read your blog posts. Also, sidebar ads become bottom ads on mobile devices. So, if a huge number of your visitors visit your blog post on mobile devices, having ads on just your sidebar may not give you the best click-through rate.

The major reason I have in-article ads turned on on all of my blogs that use AdSense.

Revenue opportunities

Will the AdSense auto ads improve your revenue? I’d say, possibly. I cannot assert that. In this blog, where I happen to share tutorials, my in-article ads have not performed very well. And they make up 80% of the ad served in this site.

It’s very normal for tutorial sites. People are always more interested in getting a problem solved when they visit a tutorial site. So don’t expect to see them clicking on ads too often.

But on my niche site, I’ve been pretty much impressed by the click-through rate; it’s been very impressive. And as we all know, a higher click-through-rate = a higher revenue.

Easy to use

Really, I’m totally impressed by how much control you have over the ads that appear on your website right from your AdSense dashboard. I’d have to give AdSense auto ads a 5.0 for that.

Turn off an ad format and the next minute it’s off. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Auto ads is supposed to automatically detect your pages to tell if it qualifies for Google ads (i.e., doesn’t infringe on the AdSense content policy). But you never can tell. You need to make sure of that yourself. I’m sure nobody want’s to get banned by AdSense.

Apart from the fact that some pages may infringe on Google AdSense content policy, occasionally, you may want to remove Google ads from certain pages.

If you run a review site like me and review certain products that include affiliate links, you may want to remove Google ads from such pages to avoid unnecessary distractions.

For instance, I turned off ads in all of my product reviews and my start a blog page. I wouldn’t appreciate seeing any wix.com ad popping up in my start a WordPress blog page. I guess you know what that means.

I have a guide on how to regulate auto ads. You can check that out if you are also interested in turning off auto ads features in certain pages of your site.

Wrapping things up

I want to conclude this auto ads review by being straightforward. Like seriously, I’m a huge fan of the newly introduced auto ads and have been playing around it lately.

And I recommend that you set up this amazing feature on your site.

In conclusion, here’s what you get to enjoy by placing auto ads code in your site:

  • Improved ad placements

From what I noticed, the ads were automatically adjusted fit into places where they would most likely get noticed and clicked by visitors while still ensuring a good UX (user experience).

  • Good UX (User-Experience)

A lot of AdSense publishers have always had issues with proper placement. In order to maintain a good user experience. The AdSense Auto Ads takes care of this for you. So you don’t have to worry about annoying your visitors or Google.

  • Improved CTR (click-through-rate) and Revenue

And as I’ve observed on my niche site, the AdSense auto ads is configured to appear in places where people can quickly notice and click on them – thereby, improving your CTR. And the more people click on your ads, the more you earn.

So many things are still being put into place, so expect to see improvements made on auto ads by the AdSense team.
