Commonwealth of Nations: List of Commonwealth countries

The Commonwealth of Nations is a willful union of 54 sovereign countries. Almost all of them are former British colonies or dependencies of those colonies. In this article, we will be telling you the list of the commonwealth countries and the dates they joined.

It is an international system made of nations with distinct political, social, cultural and economic backgrounds

There is no government that is sovereign in this community. they are all equal in rank. They also share common goals and values.

Such shared values and goals include the promotion of democracy, good governance, human rights, the rule of law.

Also included in these goals are equality before the law, individual liberty,  free trade, multilateralism, and world peace.

The commonWealth of nations promotes these values through multilateral projects and meetings, One of such meetings is the ‘Commonwealth Games’.

The member nations hold the Commonwealth Games once in every four years.

the Commonwealth Secretary-General is the chief executive of the Commonwealth and its symbol is Queen Elizabeth II. However, she does not command any special executive power over the union.

When was the Commonwealth of Nations formed?

The Commonwealth was first formally formed in 1926 when the Balfour Declaration of the Imperial Conference acknowledged the full sovereignty of dominions.

It was initially known as the “British Commonwealth” with its first members being the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Irish Free State, and Newfoundland.

Then In 1949, the London Declaration marked the beginning of the modern Commonwealth.

In the same year, it selected its current name, ‘The Commonwealth of Nations’.

The 54 members have a combined population of 2.4 billion, approximately a third of the world population.

They include both the rich, poor, underdeveloped, and developed countries across the globe.
