JAMB & WAEC Subject Combination for Chemical Engineering

Published on

Right here, we’ll provide you with the JAMB and WAEC subject combinations for Chemical Engineering. We’ll also answer some of the questions you might have in mind regarding obtaining a degree in Chemical Engineering.

From our observations, the Universities in Nigeria have nearly the same O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for studying Chemical Engineering.

Nevertheless, there are slight differences you must take note of by reading the university waivers we extracted from the JAMB brochure.

In general, all courses in Nigeria require at least 5 credit passes in O’level, to include English Language and 4 other relevant subjects.

Requirements for Studying Chemical Engineering

‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)

To be eligible for admission to study Chemical Engineering, you must score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, to include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subject.

That is, the compulsory NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subjects for Chemical Engineering are English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, plus any other science subject. Read special consideration to know whether your intended school offers waivers.

Your overall grade must not be below five credit passes in at most 2 sittings combined.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements

  • ESUTECH accepts a pass in English Language.
  • FUTO and UNN – Same as in Agricultural Engineering.
  • OSUSTECH and LAGOS require a credit pass in Further Mathematics as the fifth subject.
  • The University of Lagos accepts Agricultural Science in lieu of Biology.
  • MAUTY requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Technical Drawing/Geography/Further Mathematics.

JAMB UTME subject combination

In addition to Use Of English, which is compulsory, candidates who wish to study Chemical Engineering must register for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination

  • Universities do not offer any waivers on Chemical Engineering. Which means, you must register for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Direct Entry Requirement

If you wish to study Chemical Engineering through Direct Entry, you need to score ‘A’ level passes or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.

Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students

  • The University of Benin accepts HND (lower credit) and ND (upper credit) plus UTME requirements.
  • OAU accepts ND Chemical Engineering (Upper credit) only.
  • CARITAS and The University of Port Harcourt offers No Direct Entry.
  • ESUTECH and BENIN require ‘A’ level passes in any two of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. ESUTECH also accepts NCE/ND/HND/1st Degree with good grades and UTME requirements into 200 or 300 level respectively.
  • FutMinna accepts ND/HND (not below lower credit) in addition to UTME requirement.
  • MAUTY accepts ND (Upper credit) level in Chemical Engineering
  • LAUTECH accepts HND (lower credit) or ND (upper credit) passes into 200 level.
  • LASU accepts ND (upper credit).
  • The University of Benin – in addition to UTME requirements requires:
    • First Degree Second Class Lower in the Sciences or Agric; Degree in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy and PTI HND (Lower Credit) / ND (Upper Credit).
    • HND (Upper credit) in Engineering/Technology and PTI (HND (Upper credit) into 300 levels.
    • ND / HND holders should have ‘A’ grade in Mathematics.
  • COOU accepts HND (lower credit) for admission into year three (3) and ND for year two (2).
  • ATBU accepts ND/HND in Chemical Engineering.
  • IGBINEDION accepts ND in Engineering in related fields.
  • MAIDUGURI accepts National Diploma (Credit) and IJMB (9 points) in a related field.
  • The University of Uyo accepts ND/HND in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.
  • The University of Ilorin – Same as Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering. Relevant Discipline includes: Biomedical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Water and Environmental Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Polymer Engineering.
  • MAUTY accepts:
    • GCE `A’ Level and IJMB credit passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
    • Upper credit in ND Chemical Eng.
  • LAUTECH accepts:
    • (i) GCE ‘A’ Level Passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or
    • ND with Upper Credit/HND in related discipline (plus UTME requirements) may be considered for admission into 200 level.
  • ABU Zaria accepts:
    • ‘A’ level/IJMB passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
    • ND in Chemical Engineering with a minimum Upper Credit from Accredited Institution
    • HND in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of Lower Credit from Accredited Institutions.
  • The University of Uyo accepts ND/HND in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.
  • ABUAD accepts HND (Lower Credit) and ND (Upper Credit) in addition to UTME requirements into 200 level.
  • OSUSTECH accepts first degree from a recognized university in the relevant subjects not below Second Class Lower. (xiii) FUTO requires at least three ‘A’ level passes not below Grade C in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. It also accepts ND/HND at Upper Credit level in Engineering in addition to ‘O’ Level requirements. It does not accept the First Degree or NCE.
  • NTNU – Same as in Computer Engineering.
  • LAGOS accepts:
    • Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/A-LEVEL subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry.
    • HND/ND (Distinction) in related Engineering Course.
    • Candidate must satisfy the O/Level requirement
  • ABUJA accepts HND (lower credit) or ND (Upper Credit) in Chemical Engineering plus UTME requirements into 200 level.
  • BAUCHI accepts ND/HND in Chemical Engineering.

JAMB cut off mark for Chemical Engineering

There is no fixed cut off mark for applicants of Chemical Engineering.

Generally, though, Nigerian Universities allow students to take part in their Post UTME for Chemical Engineering if they score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME.
