Generally, candidates who want to study International Relations at any Nigerian University must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, to include English Language and four other subjects.
As it stands, there is no generally acceptable subject combination for International Relations because many universities offer waivers that have introduced little differences.

Requirements for studying International Relations in Nigerian Universities
‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)
To study International Relations at any Nigerian university, you need at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include English Language, Government, and Mathematics, plus 2 other relevant subjects.
To put it differently, the NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subject combination for International Relations is English Language, Government, and Mathematics, plus 2 other social science or art subjects.

Special consideration for the O’level requirements
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government, or History and any other two Social Sciences or Arts Subjects
- Bells University of Technology, Otta – Same as in Accounting.
- Covenant University Ota same as in Marketing.
- Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu-Nike – Enugu State and Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti – Ekiti State – Same as in International Relations.
- Southwestern University, Oku Owa requires five SSCE credit passes including English Language, Government and Mathematics and any other two relevant subjects.
- Bowen University, Iwo requires five O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government and any two Social Science subjects selected from Economics, Civics, Geography, and History.
JAMB UTME subject combination
Candidates who wish to study International Relations at any Nigerian University must register for Use of English plus any 3 of the following: Economics, History, Government, Geography, Literature in English and French.
Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination
- Bells University of Technology, Otta – Same as in Accounting.
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria requires Government/History and any two of Economics, Geography, Civic Education, French, Arabic, IRS, and CRS.
- Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti – Ekiti State – Same as in Sociology.
- Southwestern University, Oku Owa requires Mathematics and any two of the following: Economics, History, Government, Geography, Literature in English and French.
- BEYARO requires Government or History plus two other Social Science subjects.
- Bowen University, Iwo requires Mathematics, Government/History, and Economics.
Direct Entry Requirement (A’Level)
To gain admission to study International Relations through Direct Entry, you need two ‘A’ level passes chosen from Government, Economics, History, and French.
Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria accepts three ‘A’ level/IJMB from any of the following subjects: Government, History, Sociology, Economics, Geography, Arabic, French.
- The American University of Nigeria, Yola
- accepts ‘A’ level passes chosen from English Language, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Literature in English, Government, History, Economics, Geography, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, and French.
- does not accept credit passes in the following; Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Home Craft, Home management, Physical Education, Physical and Health Education, Music, Commerce, Accounting, Financial Accounting, Book Keeping, Islamic History, Religious Studies, Tajweed, Library Studies, Diction, Kiswahili, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Arabic, Turkish, Study skills.
- accepts ICGSE and ‘A’ level Cambridge and does not offer admissions direct to 200 level programs. May transfer credits relevant to it’s major at the discretion of the Dean of school
- Bells University of Technology, Otta – Same as in Accounting.
- Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti – Ekiti State – Same as in International Relations.
- Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu-Nike – Enugu State requires two ‘A’ level passes in Social Science subject from Government or History, Economics, Sociology, and Business Management. BSc, BA or HND in Local Government Administration, Public Administration and International Relations.
- Southwestern University, Oku Owa accepts IJMB, NCE, ND, HND or its equivalents.
- Mcpherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ajebo accepts JUPEB/IJMB (A’ level) or equivalent in a related discipline.
- Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu – Osun State accepts NCE with merit passes in relevant subjects.
- Bowen University, Iwo requires two A’ level passes to include Government and any one of Economics, Geography, History, and Mathematics.
International Relations cut off mark
In general, Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for International Relations if they score a minimum of 180 in the JAMB UTME, which is the JAMB approved cut off mark as of 2019.

It is widely regarded as an Administrative field since most Nigerian Universities place it under the faculty of Administration.
Gaining admission to study the course is not very competitive at most Nigerian universities.
The course isn’t a science course and the requirements do not accommodate science students. The reason is, most science students in Nigeria do not offer Government, which is one of its core subjects.
