Requirements for studying Mass Communication in Nigerian Universities
‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)
To study Mass Communication at any Nigerian university, you need at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include English Language, Literature in English and Government plus at least a pass in Mathematics.
To put it differently, the NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subject combination for Mass Communication is English Language, Literature in English, Government and at least a pass in Mathematics, plus any other social science or art subject.
Special consideration for the O’level requirements
- The Rivers State University of Science and Technology requires credits in Mathematics, Economics, and any other 3 subjects.
- The Enugu State University of Technology requires a credit in Economics and accepts History or Government.
- WELLSPRING accepts a pass in Mathematics provided the candidate has a total of five credits including English language, Government/History, and Literature.
- Cross River University of Technology requires credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English, Mathematics, Government and any other Social Science or Arts subjects.
JAMB UTME subject combination
Candidates who wish to apply for Mass Communication at any Nigerian University must register for Literature in English, Economics, and Government. the subject in the JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). As you must know by now, English Language is compulsory for all courses.
Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination
Cross River University of Technology accepts Literature in English, Government, and CRK.
Direct Entry Requirement (A’Level)
To gain admission to study Mass Communication through Direct Entry, you need two ‘A’ level passes chosen from Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Government, Geography or Statistics.
Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students
- RSUST accepts holders of the following qualifications for year II:
- ND (Upper) in relevant fields or a Degree/HND not relevant to the field for admissions to 200 level
- A Degree/HND relevant to the field for admissions to 300 level
- CRUTECH, ESUTECH, and Benue State University accept ND Upper Credit or HND in Mass Communication in a relevant field from any recognized institution. The institution also requires Direct Entry applicants to possess UTME requirements.
- UNIILORIN does not admit ‘A’ level students into its Mass Communication but accepts National Diploma Upper Credit in Mass Communication.
- WELLSPRING accepts two A’ level passes (including NABTEB), as well as National Diploma in Mass Communication from recognized institutions.
- AAUA accepts two A’ level passes or Diploma in Mass Communication (UPPER CREDIT) from recognized institutions
Mass Communication cut off mark
In general, Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for Mass Communication if they score a minimum of 180 in the JAMB UTME.
