JAMB & WAEC Subject Combination / Requirements for Law

In this post, you’ll discover the JAMB and WAEC subject combinations for Law, plus other requirements.

Furthermore, we’ll answer some of the questions you might have in mind regarding obtaining a degree in Law.

Usually, Nigerian universities have similar O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for studying Law. Nevertheless, we advise you to study the slight differences before completing your JAMB registration.

For most courses, Nigerian Universities demand for at least 5 credit passes in O’level, to include English Language and 4 other relevant subjects. This is not different for Law. In fact, many universities have strict requirements for Law, as it is one of the hottest courses in Nigeria.

Requirements for Studying Law

‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)

To be eligible for admission to study Law, you must score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include English Language, Literature in English, General Mathematics, along with 2 other subjects.

To put it differently, the compulsory NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subjects for Law applicants are English Language, Literature In English, Mathematics, plus any two from Religious Studies, Geography, Economics, History, Government, Civic Education, Fine Art or other relevant subjects. Read special consideration to know whether your intended school offers waivers.

Take note that your overall grade must not be below five credits in at most 2 sittings combined.

That is, you cannot use more than 2 O’level results combined; two is the maximum.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements

  • The University of Nigeria, Nsukka does not require mathematics and does not accept Fine Art or Local languages.
  • UNIBADAN requires 5 ‘O’ level Credits passes at one sitting or six ‘O’ level subjects at 2 sitting to include English. Language, Lit-in-English any other subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Science.
  • UNIUYO, MADONNA, Benson Idahosa University, Imo State University, Delta State University and The University of Benin accept a pass in Mathematics.
  • Ambrose Ali University and Nnamdi Azikiwe University require a credit in one science subject and one Commercial subject and at least a pass in Mathematics.
  • Olabisi Onabanjo University requires a credit pass in Literature and at least a pass in Mathematics.
  • Benue State University accepts any other three Arts/Social Science. subjects
  • UNILAG requires the Five ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any two of Arts or Social Science subjects.
  • ESUTECH requires credit passes in Mathematics or Science subjects.
  • for UNIJOS and Olabisi Onabanjo University, a credit pass in Mathematics is not compulsory.
  • UNILORIN requires Literature-in-English plus any two subjects.
  • Ebonyi State University requires any other two Arts or Social Science Subject
  • Obafemi Awolowo University requires Five “O” level credit passes to include English Language and Literature in English
  • ABUAD requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Maths, Literature in English and two other subjects from Arts or Social Science at one sitting.
  • Niger Delta University requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Maths, Literature in English and any other two subjects in not more than two sittings.
  • BOWEN requires five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and three other Arts subjects at not more than two sittings.
  • CUAB requires Five (5) O’ level credits passes in English Language, Literature in English, Government, and Economics at not more than two sittings in WASCE, GCE, and NECO. Candidates with a pass in Mathematics may be eligible for admission.
  • UMYUK requires five credit passes at SSCE(or its equivalent) in English Language, English Literature and any other three Social Science or Arts subject with a credit pass in Mathematics in not more than two sittings.
  • Kogi State University requires five credit passes at SSCE(or its equivalent) in English Language, English Literature and any other three Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts subjects.
  • ABUAD accepts five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and any two Arts or Social Science subjects at ONE sitting.
  • The University of Port Harcourt requires two other credit passes from Economics, Government, History, Geography, Commerce, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies at not more than two sittings.

JAMB UTME subject combination

In addition to the compulsory Use Of English, candidates who wish to study Law must register for any other three Arts or Social Science subjects.

Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination

  • BOWEN, UNILORIN, UNN, UNIBEN, Ambrose Ali University, and OAU require Literature in English plus any two (2) subjects.
  • UNILAG accepts any three Arts or Social Sciences subjects. Lagos does not accept Music, Fine Arts, and Principles of Accounting. Lagos accepts either Economics or Commerce but not both.
  • UNIBADAN accepts Science subjects.
  • EBSU requires Literature in English and either Government, History, CRK or Economics.
  • RSUST requires History or Government and two other subjects.
  • CUAB, DELSU, and ABU require Literature in English and any other Arts or Social Science subjects.
  • OOU does not insist on Literature in English.
  • The University of Port Harcourt requires Literature in English and any two subjects from Economics, Government, History, Geography, Commerce, Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Studies.

Direct Entry Requirement

To gain admission to study Law via Direct Entry, you need to score at least two ‘A’ level passes Arts or Social Science subjects. Those who wish to study Law after their first degree must have graduated with at least a second class lower in a related field.

Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students

  • ABU accepts two ‘A’ Level/IJMB Passes In English Literature and other two Arts or Social Science subjects.
  • AAU and DELSU do not accept NCE.
  • MAIDUGURI requires two ‘A’ levels from Government, Literature in English and Religious Studies.
  • AAU does not accept any Diploma and NCE but accepts only first degree (minimum of 2.2) plus the ‘O’ level requirements.
  • UNIZIK accepts NCE/Degree Certificate plus UME requirements.
  • Imo State University does not offer Direct Entry into Law
  • UNICAL:
    • does not accept any Diploma/NCE.
    • accepts Two ‘A’ level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects in one sitting.
    • accepts first Degree (second class lower) in Arts or Social Science
  • LASU requires at least two ‘A’ level passes with credit passes in English Language and Literature in English at ‘O’ level.
  • LASU accepts First Degree (minimum of third Class Upper) plus credit in five ‘O’ level subjects to include English Language and English Literature.
  • COOU and ILORIN do not require English Literature for degree holders.
  • BENIN requires UME requirements plus two ‘A’ level passes; HND (Lower credit) and NCE with credit passes in two Teaching subjects; Degree with at least Second Class Lower Division.
  • RSUST and OAU accept First Degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours plus UTME requirements but does not accept NCE/ND/HND.
  • ABSU accepts ND, ACIS, ACA 1st Degree (2nd class lower).
  • DELSU requires ‘A’ level English in Literature in English.
  • UNIJOS accepts any Class of first Degree but does not accept NCE, ND, HND.
  • NAU requires three O/L credits to include English Language, Eng. Lit., & one science Subject with a pass in Mathematics for Direct Entry candidates
  • UNIZIK accepts HND with credits or distinction aggregate from a recognised institution and at least five O/L credits which must include Eng. Lang, Mathematics, and/ or any other science subject.
  • UNIUYO does not accept IJMB Mathematics and/or any other Science subject.
  • UNILAG accepts:
    • Very good passes in JUPEB/A’ Level Subjects: Literature in English and any two Arts or Social Sciences.
    • First Degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper.
  • COOU accepts GCE, ‘A’ level or HSC passes in two subjects plus credit level passes in three ‘O’ level subjects including English Language and Mathematics, English Lit plus UME requirement. First Degree Holders with at least Second Class Lower.
  • OOU accepts a Degree in Arts or Social Science not Lower than a Second Class Lower plus the basic UTME requirements.
  • AAUA requires credit passes in Literature-in-English and Mathematics.
  • UNILORIN accepts ‘A’ level English-Literature in lieu of Literature-in-English. Also accepts Commercial subjects
  • Benson Idahosa University requires in addition to the O level requirements specified, a minimum of two relevant subjects passed at GCE Advanced level or NCE (3 merits).
  • OOU accepts First Degree (Second Class Lower)
  • UNIBADAN accepts two papers at Advanced Level plus Credit in five/six other ‘O level subjects including English Language and Literature in English. Accepts also a good First Degree with Credit in English Language at ‘O’ level.
  • Benson Idahosa University accepts ‘A’ level/NCE (three merits) in a relevant discipline, not below credit level plus O Level requirements.
  • OAU accepts First Degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours plus UTME requirements.
  • UNIOSUN accepts
    • three (3) papers at Principal level in Higher School Certificate or GCE Advanced level together with credit passes in not less than five other subjects including in English Language and Literature in English in the SSS Certificate Examination or GCE “O” Level examination or their equivalent, or
    • A University degree of Osun State University, in a relevant discipline – of not less than a Second Class Lower Division or any other recognized University in a relevant discipline.
  • EBSU accepts NCE, ND or Degree results in Arts or Social Science subjects in addition to O’ level requirements.
  • RSUST accepts only candidates with first Degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours in addition to O’ level requirements.
  • BOWEN accepts
    • three (3) papers at Principal level in Higher School Certificate or GCE Advanced level together with credit passes in not less than five other subjects including in English Language and Literature in English in the SSS Certificate Examination or GCE “O” Level examination or their equivalent, or
    • A University degree of not less than a Second Class Lower Division plus credits in English Language and Literature in English at O’ level, or (c) At least two (2) papers at G.C.E. Advanced level or its equivalent plus three (3) ‘O’ level papers including English Language and Literature in English at O’ level.
  • NDU accepts
    • At least 2 passes at Advance GCE level in relevant subject or its equivalent subjects
    • The General Certificate of Education ‘O’ level (GCE) or its equivalent in five (5) subjects at credit passes in English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. Plus at least Second Class Honours degree of this University or any other University recognized by Senate.
  • CUAB accepts
    • A degree
    • Mature students with experience in related fields who possess basic requirements shall be considered for admission.
  • OOU accepts a degree in Arts or Social Science not lower than a Second (2nd) Class plus the basic UTME requirements.
  • EBSU accepts HND and ND with a minimum of Upper credit from relevant fields.
  • UMYUK requires:
    • two A level credit passes in any Art or Social Science subject.
    • At least 9 points in the acceptable subject combination in IJMB.
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in any Discipline with at least a Second Class Lower.
  • ABUAD accepts Excellent JUPEB.
  • The University of Port Harcourt accepts first degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours. All Direct Entry candidates MUST satisfy O’ level requirements.

JAMB cut off mark for Law

The cut-off mark varies with universities.

In general, though, Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for Law if they score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME.
