NCDC Debunks Reports that they spent N1 Billion on SMS to Nigerians

Published on

The NCDC has debunked the ‘Fake News’ currently circulating on the web, claiming that they spent N1 billion naira on SMSs to Nigerians.

Recall that a few weeks back the NCDC announced that they plan on partnering with telecoms to make information available to customers during this covid-19 pandemic.

Details regarding the deal weren’t entirely clear to several Nigerians; however, the NCDC has now come out to reveal that the text messages have been ‘largely’ provided by the telecoms giants.

“The headline claiming that NCDC has spent N1 billion on SMS to Nigerians is FALSE,” the NCDC wrote in a statement.

“While communication through SMS is a key part of our #COVID19 response strategy, this has been largely provided as in-kind support by Airtel Nigeria MTNNG and GloWorld.

Indeed, one of the harsh realities Nigeria now faces is the fact that there are several false reports that circulating on the web that can do more harm than good.
