Cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy receive monthly stipends for their up-keep. After graduating from the NDA and becoming an officer, they also receive monthly salaries that conform to the Nigeria pay scale.
As virtually everyone in Nigeria knows, the Nigerian Defence Academy is a leading military and educational institution for the Nigerian Airforce, Army and Naval officers to be.
It is the first of just two Military universities in Nigeria, the other being Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State, which was established in 2018. However, unlike the Nigeria Defence Academy, the Army University located in Biu doesn’t offer military training.
The duration of training at the Nigerian Defence Academy is 5 years. 4 of those years is for academic training while the remaining one year is for military training.
After gaining admission into the NDA, students (cadets, so to say) begin to receive monthly stipends.
NDA cadets’ monthly salary
Cadets at the Nigeria Defence Academy earn a monthly stipend of roughly ₦50,000.
A few years back, ₦14,000 was deducted from their monthly salary as savings. And during passing out, they will receive the accumulation of those monthly savings. But, for now, we have yet to confirm if that is still in practice.
Officers’ Salaries after graduating from the NDA
After graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy, the basic salary of officers in the Army, Navy and Air Force ranges from 120,000 to 150,000 (aside from allowances).
Naturally, as they begin to advance in level, they also begin to earn higher. See table below for the minimum expected salary of army officers:
Ranks | Monthly Salary |
Second Lieutenant | ₦120,000 |
First Lieutenant | ₦180,000 |
Captain | ₦220,000 |
Major | ₦300,000 |

Brigadier General | ₦750,000 |
Major General | ₦950,000 |

That of Naval and Air Force Officers is not too far of.
