Nigerian Air Force Salary Structure 2020 – Monthly Wages For All Ranks

This article provides information on the Salary Structure of the Nigerian Air Force in 2020 — from the highest to the lowest rank.

As we all know, Nigeria boasts one of the largest of Air Force personnel in Africa. Currently, it employs over 10,000 personnel and owns several fighter jets.

If you read our previous article concerning the salary structure of other military personnel, you’ll notice that the figures are very much similar. To put it differently, people who occupy similar ranks in the Nigerian Navy, Army and Air Force receive nearly the same monthly salary.

Officers enjoy a slightly better pay rate compared to other members of the Nigerian workforce. However, there’s no doubt whatsoever that they deserve single penny they earn and even much more.

Salary structure of commissioned officers in the Nigerian Air Force

Air Chief Marshal ₦1.7 million per month

Any officer who attains the rank of Air Chief Marshal is entitled to a monthly salary of roughly ₦1.7 million (NGN). Multiplying this figure by the twelve months in a year, we’ll get an annual salary of roughly ₦20.4 million.

Air Chief Marshal is the highest rank ever attained by any officer in Nigeria. But for the records, it is not the highest attainable rank. The Highest attainable rank is the Marshal of the Air Force, which is similar to Field Marshal in the Army and Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy.

The point we’re trying to make here is that Air Chief Marshal is the highest-paid rank in the Nigerian Air Force.

Air Marshal ₦1.5 million per month

Any officer who has attained the Air Marshal rank is second only to an Air Chief Marshal. Officers with this rank are entitled to a monthly wage of roughly ₦1.5 million (NGN), which is equivalent to ₦18 million (NGN) per annum.

Air Marshal is similar to Lieutenant General in the Army and Admiral in the Navy.

Air Vice-Marshal ₦ 1.37 million per month

Air Vice-Marshal is directly below Air Marshal in rank order. Any officer who reaches this position is entitled to a monthly salary of ₦1.37 million. And per year, a salary of ₦16,440,000 (₦16.4 million).

Air Vice-Marshal is similar to Rear Admiral in the Navy and Major General in the Army.

Air Commodore ₦677,000 per month

Air Commodore is the rank just below Air Vice-Marshal. Officers who attain this level will receive a monthly paycheck of approximately ₦677,000. That is, at the end of one calendar year, such officers go home with paychecks of roughly ₦8,124,000 (₦8.1 million).

Group Captain ₦352,000 per month

Any officer who attains the rank of Group Captain in the Nigerian Air Force is entitled to a basic salary of around ₦352,000 per month. Calculating this same figure based on the 12 months in a year, we got an annual pay rate of ₦4,224,000 (₦4.2 million).

Wing Commander ₦342,000 per month

Any Air Force officer who attains Wing Commander rank is entitled to a monthly stipend of ₦342,000. Which means, every year that officer banks roughly ₦4,104,000 (₦4.1 million).

Squadron Leader ₦248,000 per month

Squadron leaders in the Nigerian Air Force are entitled to a monthly wage of ₦248,000. Therefore they go home with paychecks of around ₦2,970,000 (₦2.97 million) every year. Squadron Leader is directly below Wing Commander and directly above Flight Lieutenant in rank order and salary structure.

Flight Lieutenant — ₦232,000 per month

Flight Lieutenants are entitled to a monthly basic salary of ₦232,000 – which means they earn ₦2,784,000 (₦2.78 million) annually. Based on rank order and salary scale, Flight Lieutenants are directly below Squadron Leaders and directly above Flying Officers.

Flying Officers ₦218,000 per month

Flying Officers in the Nigerian Air Force receive a basic salary of around ₦218,000 per month. Therefore, their yearly income is roughly ₦2,616,000 (₦2.62 million). In terms of salary structure, Flying officers are directly below Flight Lieutenants and directly above Pilot Officers.

Pilot Officers ₦187,000 per month

All officers in the Nigerian Air Force who attain the rank of Pilot Officers are qualified for a monthly basic salary of roughly ₦187,000. So, their annual salary take-home is not less than ₦2,244,000 (₦2.24 million).

Pilot officers are the least paid commissioned officers in the Nigerian Air Force. This is not surprising, considering the fact that they are the lowest-ranked commissioned officers.

For non-commissioned/enlisted personnel in the Nigerian Air Force, the highest rank is Air Warrant Officer while the lowest rank is Aircraftman. The table below provides the breakdown of their monthly salary in ascending order.

In addition, the figures you see are just the basic salaries. There are several other allowances officers in the NAF earn, which end up making the figures much bigger. Whenever they go for missions, Air drills and more, they receive several allowances and incentives from the Nigerian Federal Government.

There have been recent outcries for the Federal Government of Nigeria to increase the minimum wage for civil servants. If it is successfully approved, military personnel will most likely benefit. In other words, we may see an increase in the salary scale of the Nigerian Air Force in a not too distant future.
