The protesters were demanding the provision of palliatives to minimise the effect of the lockdown.

The reason for the shooting is not known yet. But according to a source, a security agent that went there to ensure calm in the area had shot the victim

He is said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Chants of “we need food,” “we don’t want to listen,” were heard as the people protested

“As security people were trying to disperse the crowd, they resisted. I think it was in the process the guy got shot on the waist,” the source who spoke in confidence said.

The Nation reported that there were chants of “we need food,” “we don’t want to listen,” were heard as the people protested.

THe governor of Delta state, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had announced the extension of the lockdown.

He also revealed that the 14 days will help government trace, identify and isolate those who have had contacts with the three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state.

The governor promised that by the end of the week, food items will be made ready for the indigent and helpless persons in the state.

However, the protesters say it is wickedness for the state government to lock them in their homes for another two weeks with no food and electricity.

“We cannot stay at home without food and light. Let Gov. OKowa send his soldiers to kill all of us and bury us,”

The people described the state governor as being “insensitive,” leaving them to die of hunger.

One of the women, Mrs Rosslyn Akpamredo, said, “Instead of hunger to kill me and my children, we will prefer the Chinese Coronavirus to kill us and let Okowa come and bury us if we die.

“We cannot stay at home without food and light. Let Gov. OKowa send his soldiers to kill all of us and bury us,” she said.

Authorities of Sapele LGA later joined the security operatives to address the people and return calm to the area.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, who confirmed the incident said, “yes, a vigilante man shot someone. I have asked the DPO to go and get the vigilante man. The situation is under control now”.
