Police inspector kills motorcyclist in Imo State

A police inspector has reportedly shot dead a 27-year-old man at Banana Junction in Amaifeke town near Orlu in Imo State.

The officer was in a team of policemen who mounted roadblock in that area and were enforcing the wearing of face mask when the incident occurred.

The state government had ordered the wearing of the facemask to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The yet to be identified deceased, who hailed from the nearby Okporo community, was carrying a passenger and not putting on a facemask which led to the Inspector stopping him.

According to sources at the place where the incident occurred, the police asked the man to pay some amount of money before he could go with his motorcycle.

But the late motorcyclist insisted on not paying because others who did not wear facemasks were allowed to go without their bikes being seized.

According to The Nation, an eyewitness said, “When this argument was going on, I don’t know what happened that led the inspector to shoot him at close range and the man died instantly, forcing the policemen to enter their vehicle and run away.

Reports have it that policemen guarding Orlu council Headquarters quickly discarded their uniforms and disguised as civilians.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, told The Nation on phone that one of the officers was ‘matcheted’.

The CP said: “The situation is being managed. It is true that a policeman killed a man but the situation is not out of control. People whose loved one was killed have a right to be angry. One of the policemen was also macheted and he is in a hospital as we speak.
