Premier League to ‘restart in July’ and could finish in just 4 weeks behind closed doors

There have been debates centring on what should be done about the English Premier League 2019/2020 season that was postponed due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

Opinions have been whether the season should be pronounced null and void, ended in its current state or played to the end at the quickest opportunity.

Whatever the case may be, the pending monetary loss which the football body could face if the suspended season doesn’t go through to the end is £750million in TV revenue for clubs, according to several reports.

The season was supposed to resume at the end of April; however, the disastrous consequences of coronavirus pandemic across the country and indeed across the world make the date uncertain.

It was reported by Football London, that there is a suggestion that it may not return until another four months.

Moreover, when it does return, the EPL and EFL may endeavour to wrap up all the games within “four to six weeks” with no fans in attendance.

But The Sun reported that “top-flight players are raging after they were told they could end up playing three matches in five days to complete the season.”`

According to the report, there was a conference call between the EPL, EFL, the FA and the government on Saturday, they reached a plan to complete the season in July.

Most of the clubs have nine to ten matches left for them to play to wrap up the season; however, the coronavirus pandemic led to the current suspension of the league.

Asides from the EPL that was initially postponed until the end of April, other leagues across Europe, including La Liga, Seria A, UEFA/Europa Champions league, Bundesliga, among others, were all postponed indefinitely.

The statement read: “The Premier League, EFL and PFA met today and discussed the growing seriousness of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was stressed that the thoughts of all three organisations continue to be with everyone affected by the virus.

“The Premier League, EFL and PFA agreed that difficult decisions will have to be taken in order to mitigate the economic impact of the current suspension of professional football in England and agreed to work together to arrive at shared solutions.

“The leagues will not recommence until 30 April at the earliest. They will only do so when it is safe and conditions allow.

“Further meetings will take place next week with a view to formulating a joint plan to deal with the difficult circumstances facing the leagues, their clubs, players, staff and fans,” it added.

The Premier League board will consult with all 20 clubs but the final decision will rest with the board to decide the fate of this season’s end.
