The Nigeran Defence Academy is arguably the most competitive higher institution in Nigeria. Thousands apply every year; however, only a handful of them end up gaining admission.

If you want to join the Nigerian Defence Academy, popularly known as the NDA, you must, first of all, equip yourself with all the necessary information. Through that, you’ll avoid several preliminary mistakes that could end up hampering your chances.

Founded on 5 February 1964, The NDA is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. However, it is more than just an institution of higher learning; the NDA is a place for breeding future officers of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The years before 2011, only males could apply to join the NDA. The first set of females commenced training in September 2011.

All successful applicants undergo 4 years academic programme and after that, they’ll go for one year of military training.

Admission Requirements for the Nigerian Defence Academy

General requirements

To be eligible for admission into the regular course in the Nigerian Defence Academy, here are the requirements yo must mee:

  • Minimum of 5 credit passes in O’level which must include English and Mathematics. Moreover, your 5 credit passes must be obtained in not more than 2 sittings. Furthermore, candidates awaiting O’level results are not qualified to apply. Also, only examination results of not more than 5 years before the date of application are acceptable.
  • You must not be less than 17 years old and not more than 21 years old at the time of entry into the Academy. Nigerian Air Force candidates, however, must be between the ages of 17 and 18 years old at entry.
  • Male applicants must stand at a height not less than 1.68 metres tall while female applicants must not be less than 1.50.
  • Applicants must be medically and physically fit and must be of good moral character.
  • All applicants must be single and without legal obligation to support any child or other individuals.
  • You must be able to present a certificate of origin obtained from a Local Government; a certificate of State indigeneship from the Office of the State Governor is desirable.

Specific academic requirements

Economics

Candidates who wish to study Economics at the Nigerian Defence Academy must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Economics, Mathematics and any other two among Accounts, Commerce, Government, Geography and History.

Accounting

To study Accounting at the NDA, you must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Accounting, Mathematics and any other two among Economics, Commerce, Government, Geography and History.

Geography

Candidates who wish to study Geography at the NDA must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Geography, Mathematics and any other two among Economics, Commerce, Government, Accounting and History.

History and International Studies

To study History and International Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy, you must have an O’level result with at least 5 credit passes that include English Language, History, Mathematics and any other two among Economics, Commerce, Government, Accounting and Geography.

Political Science and Defence Studies

Candidates who wish to study Political Science and Defence Studies must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Government, Mathematics and any other two among Economics, Commerce, History, Accounting and Geography.

BSc Psychology

If you wish to study Psychology at the NDA, then must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Biology, Mathematics and any other two among Economics, Health Science, Government and Agricultural Science.

Civil Engineering

To study Civil Engineering, you must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other subject among Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, and Biology.

Electrical/Electronics Engineering

Candidates who wish to study Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the Nigerian Defence Academy must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other one among Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, and Biology.

Mechanical Engineering

Candidates who wish to study Mechanical Engineering at the NDA must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other subject from Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, and Biology.

Biological Sciences

To study Biological Sciences, you must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and any other two from Physics, Agric Science and Health Science.

Chemistry

Candidates who wish to study Chemistry at the Nigerian Defence Academy must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and any other two from Physics, Agric Science and Health Science.

Mathematics

If you want to study Mathematics, then you must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any other two from Chemistry, Further Mathematics and Biology.

Computer Science

Computer Science applicants must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any other two from Further Mathematics, Chemistry & Biology.

Physics

Candidates who wish to study Physics at the Nigerian Defence Academy must have at least 5 credit passes in O’level to include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any other two from Chemistry, Technical Drawing and Biology.
