School Fees for the National Open University of Nigeria (2020)

The National Open University of Nigeria, popularly known as NOUN, was founded on 22 July 1983. However, The Nigerian government suspended it on 25 April 1984.

And in 2011, nearly 17 years after it was suspended, NOUN resumed operations in accordance with the directives of the then-president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Upon its establishment, the NOUN became the first Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution in West Africa, boasting the highest number of students. Also, the institution boasts the highest number of students when compared to other universities in Nigeria.

Similar to other universities in Nigeria, students at the National Open University of Nigeria must pay certain amounts as their school fees annually. In this post, we’ll provide a breakdown.

NOUN school fees for undergraduate students – 2019 update

Freshers

If you’re resuming year one at the NOUN, here’s a breakdown of the fees you need to pay:

Returning students

The table below shows a breakdown of the fees undergraduate students must pay from 200 level to their final year:

As you can see from the table above, returning students do not have to pay any fees for caution, orientation, matriculation, JAMB regularization, and result verification.

Important points to note:

In addition to the fees above, all undergraduate students have to pay an exam fee of ₦1,000 per course for both their first and second semesters.

That is, if you offer 10 courses in your 1st and 2nd semesters each, you have to pay an additional ₦20,000 for those courses.

In the event that you are a returning student and you offer 20 courses in one session, your total school fees for that session becomes ₦20,000 + ₦18,000, which gives a total of ₦38,000.

But if you’re a fresher offering 20 courses, you have to pay a total of ₦20,000 for exams and ₦36,000 for compulsory fees, which gives a total of ₦56,000.

Also, all final year undergraduate students have to pay a project fee of ₦15,000.00 only.

NOUN school fees for postgraduate students – 2019 update

Freshers

For those who gained admission to study one of the postgraduate courses at the National Open University of Nigeria, here’s a breakdown of the school fees:

Returning students

For your second year or higher in the NOUN postraduate school, below are the fees you have to pay:

Also, returning postgraduate students do not have to pay any fees for caution, orientation, matriculation, JAMB regularization, and result verification.

Important points to note:

In addition to the fees above, all postgraduate students have to pay an exam fee of ₦2,000 per course, including first and second semesters.

In other words, people who offer a total of 10 courses in both 1st and 2nd semesters must pay an additional ₦20,000 as exam fees.

Additionally, all final year postgraduate students have to pay a project fee of ₦25,000 (PGD) or ₦40,000 (Masters).

Note: The figures above are correct for the 2019/2019 session. Inevitably, the institution will at some point review those fees and probably increase or reduce it. If that happens, we’ll make sure those changes reflect here.
