Should MI have left Chocolate City Earlier?

Many would argue that MI Abaga should have left Chocolate city a long time ago. Some people, on the other hand, would argue that he should never have left. In any case, he’s leaving with his head up high and without any bad blood.

Without doubt, MI Abaga was the face of the popular music label for several years. Eventually, he became the CEO of Chocolate City from 2015 to 2019.

Indeed, Chocolate City is widely regarded as one of the biggest and most successful Indigenous urban record labels in Africa. The Label was home to some popular singers, including but not limited to Jeremiah Gyang, Brymo, Ice Prince, and Jesse Jagz.

Many of the aforementioned singers left a long time ago. For example, Ice Prince who was vice president of the group left in 2016. According to him, it was because he wanted to grow up.

Kemi Filaini quoted him as saying, “I’ve been in Chocolate city since 2008, I’m not going to be baby sited for the rest of my life, I grew up at some point. Leaving Chocolate City was not about money, it had nothing to do with money, if you have noticed you’ll never hear anything about me having issues with them, it was never about money, I was a baby with Chocolate City, now I’m a man on my own”.

“I have full support, full love, full everything from Chocolate city, I was brought up by a rap god, Choc boys including Jesse Jagz, [I] and MI will always be a family, a team. MI and Ice Prince are blood brothers like this. Before MI signs a new artiste, he consults me and I do same till today,” He added.

Was leaving Chocolate City in 2016 good for Ice Prince’s career? Did it work out for Jesse Jagz, Brymo and Jeremiah Gyang?

Those are questions that will definitely trigger mixed answers.

Too little, too late?

At 38, MI has still got the flows and the lyrics. However, one can’t help but admit that the award-winning singer’s timing is somewhat late.

Nevertheless, he leaves with his head up high, after giving so much to the Label including the prime of his career and grooming so many successful singers.

Indeed, many people can attest to his services, even Chocolate city:

Now that Incredible Music is here, we hope to see him replicate the success Chocolate City has so far enjoyed. In any case, nothing can erase MI’s Achievements over the year.

How Nigerians took it

From the reactions, many people thought MI owned Chocolate City but that’s incorrect. The record label was founded in 2005 by lawyer Audu Maikori along with Paul Okeugo.
