Rema, who is undoubtedly the fastest-rising music star did his primary and secondary school education in Edo State.

Unfortunately, he lost his father and older brother at a very young age, leaving him with no other option but to step up.

Hustling saw him leave his mother to travel to Cotonou and then Ghana when he was just 16 years old. During an interview with Capital Xtra, he revealed that he worked at a bar beach, which was his first job while he was in Ghana.

Career

How he started singing

At a very young age, Rema drew and wrote comics and was very good at it. However, when he turned 11 it became clear that he was talented in music as well. His ability to write comical stories came in handy when he switched to music, as he was able to write his own songs.

Rema started his unprofessional singing career as a rapper while he was still in secondary school.

He joined 3 different bands in church and he was the leader of one the bands christened The Rap Nation. Back then, he had a passion for gospel music and dreamt of performing at The Christ Embassy Headquarters located in Lagos.

During an interview, he revealed that his pastor inspired him to write songs after discovering his talent. His pastor also prophesied that he’d be great and that the whole world would listen to his music.

Rema met a young talented singer like himself, Princewill Emmanuel, also known as Alpha P, at a religious event. Eventually, they formed a musical group named RnA. The name RnA was formed using the initials of their stage names, Rema and Alpha P. While they were yet together, Rema did the rapping while Alpha P did the hooks.

Both singers participated in several competitions in which they outperformed people who were much older than them.

In 2015, they performed in a talent show, Dream Alive, in which they emerged winners. Subsequently, the duo released a single titled ‘Mercy’ which according to them was to show appreciation for how far God had taken them.

The song earned them recognition and interviews with popular TV stations, including Channels TV and Etv.

Tough Times

Although Rema’s talent was glaring, he lacked funding, as his mother was incapable of meeting up with the financial demands of growing his musical career.

Eventually, Rema dropped everything and travelled to Cotonou to hustle. From there, he took a bus to Ghana where he worked at a Bar Beach. While in Ghana, he learned a little bit of Ghanaian music, which he disclosed during an interview with Capital Xtra.

From hustling and singing unprofessionally, he was able to raise enough money to buy his mother an SUV when he was just 17 years old.

What makes it even more remarkable is the fact that he didn’t have a ride himself when he decided to buy his mother one.

When asked during an interview with Capital Xtra why he did that, he revealed that he couldn’t bear to see his mother trekking and that he didn’t have much to do with the money since he was 17 years old.

After giving his mother most of the money he made from hustling, he spent the remaining on studio sessions, making use of downloaded beats and recording underground.

In February 2018, Rema did a freestyle with D’Prince’ ‘Gucci Gang‘, which he then uploaded on Instagram. Fortunately, D’Prince saw the freestyle and loved it. Thereafter, D’Prince got in touch with him and the rest is history.

In March 22nd, 2019, he signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records.

He released his debut EP “Rema” the same 2019 which ranked number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria.
