Why Social Distancing is Nigeria’s only way out of coronavirus for now

We have been hearing of grim reports from several nations around the world. The death tolls from coronavirus in Italy, Spain, the US and other developed countries keep piling up.

The sad truth is that all of the nations finding it hard to cope with this pandemic are by far more developed and better equipped than Nigeria.

As such, seeing Nigeria leave its borders open or not forcefully quarantining new entries for that long was as a matter of fact reckless. Indeed, that is a draconian move, but considering the fragile nature of our healthcare, it would have been justifiable.

A way out for Nigerians

The deed is done. Now, we must find a way out of this mess.

But how do we do that?

The number of cases recorded at the moment is just 40. Which is comparably low.

However, the number number of cases lurking in the background could be 10 times higher. And that is why we must not joke with this outbreak.

As Funmi Awelewa rightly mentioned, Nigeria is not medically ready to handle a high spread of the deadly covid-19.

Most of our hospitals are not buoyant enough to handle critically ill patients, which a severe case of coronavirus can result in.

That explains why many of the top politicians, including Nigeria’s president travel abroad whenever they are critically ill or need serious medical attention.

Bearing in mind all the aforementioned limitations, our safest bet is social distancing. Or else, Nigeria could face something worse than what Italy and Spain are currently experiencing.

Therefore, I strongly advise you to stay safe away from crowded places. Also, do not forget to clean up door handles and surfaces several people touch with disinfectants as frequently as possible. In addition, wash your hands with soap under running water as frequently as possible.

Above all read WHO articles on how to keep yourself and family safe. It is the most authoritative place to get new updates regarding the deadly outbreak.
