Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, popularly known as Wole Soyinka, is celebrating his 86th birthday today.
The leading playwright, poet and essayist who was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, became the first sub-Saharan African to be honoured in that category.
Soyinka was born into a Yoruba family in Abeokuta on 13 July 1934. Meaning, he is now 87 years old.
Several Nigerians took to Twitter to celebrate him, offering prayers and kind words.
“The forest that holds a thousand stories, each strand spins a tale.
“On some days we call the Interpreters, for others only Madmen & Specialists will do but in all things, Kongi’s Harvest continues to bloom.
“Happy Birthday Wole Soyinka!,” Sterling Bank wrote.
