A baby girl has been born with two mouths; a rare case that has only been recorded 35 times since year 1900.

According to doctors, the girl had an additional lip, set of teeth and even a small tongue that moved at the same time as that in her main mouth.

At first, doctors were puzzled when the deformity was observed on a scan during the mum’s third trimester.

They had initially given different diagnoses like a cyst, a bone disorder or teratoma, which is when a twin absorbs another during development

However, when the child was born in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, doctors discovered what they characterised as a “duplicated oral cavity”, or second mouth.

This included ‘another lip, set of six teeth and even a small tongue that moved at the same time as the tongue in her main mouth’.

Apparently, the condition doesn’t pose any harm, but they did an operation to eliminate the extra features.

Six months later, the baby was almost totally unaffected by the situation.

SkyNews reported that the baby is only suffering some swelling and a minor nerve defect in her bottom lip.

In the BMJ case report, the doctors said, “At a follow-up appointment at 2 weeks of age, the infant was healthy appearing, feeding well and gaining weight with no oral incompetence”.
