  • President Muhamadu Buhari has established a committee to look into the US visa ban
  • He said Nigeria will maintain productive relations with the United States.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced a travel ban targeting Nigeria and 5 other countries.

All things being equal, Nigerians will no longer be able to obtain any US visa that can lead to permanent residency effective from 21 February 2020.

Several people have reacted to the unfortunate development, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, who urged Trump to instead target those in government who are failing in their duties.

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, forthwith responded to the DHS announcement.

In a statement signed by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), He said: “Nigeria remains committed to maintaining productive relations with the United States and its international allies especially on matters of global security.”

The statement made it clear that the president has set up a committee to study and address the issue.

“Accordingly, President Muhammadu Buhari has established a committee, to be chaired by the Hon. Minister of Interior, to study and address the updated U.S. requirements.

“The committee will work with the U.S Government, INTERPOL and other stakeholders to ensure all updates are properly implemented.” Femi Adesina added.
