Chad Army ‘kills 1,000 Boko Haram insurgents’ in Lake Chad

The Chadian army says it has wound up an offensive against Boko Haram in Lake Chad, killing 1,000 insurgents.

Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermendoa Agouna who spoke with AFP news agency revealed that 52 troops died during the operation, which started on March 31.

“A thousand terrorists have been killed, 50 motorised canoes have been destroyed,” the colonel said.

Agouna said the operation christened Bahoma Anger, which was launched after nearly 100 soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack last month, ended on Wednesday after the armed fighters were forced out of the country.

The sect had mounted a seven-hour assault on a Chadian army base at Bohoma on March 23rd, killing 92 soldiers.

Boko Haram’s 11 years campaign in the northeastern parts of Nigeria another other neigbouring countries has led to the death of tens of thousands.

Earlier this week, audio emerged in which Abubakar Shekau stylishly begged the Chad Army to leave his fighters alone. The factional sect leader also urged his fighters to be strong following the onslaught by the Chad Army.
