Members of the church, which is located along Ugberikoko road in Sapele, attacked and injured the three clerics, leaving them needing medical attention.

A police source who craved anonymity confirmed that three members of the team were bruised while one sustained an eye injury.

“The victim who is a respected church pastor, and an exco member of CAN, in Sapele is currently hospitalized as his head was pummeled by Church members who confronted the victim and his team members with violence for attempting to ensure social distancing in the service,” Vanguard quoted a source as saying.

According to eyewitnesses, the pastor was nowhere to be seen when the violence ensued, suggesting he supported the attack.

After much deliberation, the CAN chairman decided to report the matter to the police. At first, he hesited in a bid to avoid ‘washing the dirty linen’ of the Christian body in public.

One of the sources went on to reveal that the church had earlier flouted the lockdown order, leading to the Assistant Pastor getting arrested.
