courses you can study without english

Recently a reader sent me an email asking if there are courses students can study without English Language in Nigeria.

Explaining further, he told me he had a D7 pass in English Language, in both WAEC and NECO.

As we all know, most Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics have very strict admission requirements.

As a result, they don’t offer admission to student who do not meet certain subject / grade requirements.

English is Nigeria’s lingua franca and, as a matter of fact, one of the most important subjects in secondary schools. However, that doesn’t cancel out the fact that several students still end up performing poorly in it.

Thing is, many subjects are optional. To put it differently, you can find an alternative course even if you failed them. So, does that apply also to English?

Subjects you can do without credit in English?

English Language is considered the bedrock for virtually all the courses offered in Nigerian universities. In other words, it is deemed the most important subject and, as such, you can’t gain admission into most Nigerian schools without at least a credit pass in it.

Notwithstanding, we recommend you check JAMB brochure or your school website, in case changes have been made in recent times.

What about in JAMB?

In Nigeria, it is mandatory that all students register for English language. In fact, you don’t have much of an option as it is automatically added to your list of subjects.

Therefore, you only get to choose the other three you wish to add, depending on your prefered course of study and its requirements.

Finally: We insist you check your JAMB brochure or intended university website to clarify whatever doubts you may have.
