COVID-19: ‘Some billionaires donating to FG are hypocrites for not reaching out directly to the poor’ – HURIWA Says

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, several Nigerian billionaires have made mammoth donations to help alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians.

However, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has hit out at some of them for donating to the Federal Government-controlled Coronavirus pandemic funds instead of reaching out to be poor masses directly.

The statement which was issued by Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the National Coordinator of HURIWA, accused some of the billionaires of having ulterior motives with their donations.

He alleged that some of the billionaires are trying to attract tax reliefs with their donations and as such are hypocrites.

“Those making donations to the government to attract tax reliefs for their businesses are hypocrites. This is because the huge funds will not trickle down to ordinary Nigerians who are in dire need of reliefs at this time,” The statement read.

“The funds will probably be mismanaged since there is an opaque financial administrative style in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration,” it added.

The same speech also accused President Buhari of lacking human empathy because of the manner in which he’s handling the shutdown of Nigeria’s commercial and political capitals.
