The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, the umbrella body for the Electricity Distributions Companies (DisCos), has announced that Nigerians will now pay more than double what they used to pay for electricity as from July 1st, 2020. However, they have not guaranteed steady power supply.
For years, Nigeria which is considered the biggest economy in Africa has been riddled with poor power supply. Not sparing even the Federal Capital Territory.
With more than 100 percent tariff hike, one would expect a considerable change in the rate of power supply.
But unfortunately, that isn’t the case, based on a statement made by the ANED Executive Director (Research and Advocacy), Sunday Oduntan.
“There will be a change compared to five years ago. But don’t expect 24 hours of electricity,” The Nation quoted Oduntan as saying during a telephone conversation.
“There is no increase in generation. Have you heard of an increase in transmission? These are the issues. There is a need for realignment.”
It remains to be seen how Nigerians react to this unwelcome development.
