Recently, someone sent me a message asking “how many years does it take to study law in Nigeria?”
Law is one of the most popular and, therefore, most competitive courses in Nigeria. It is also one of the courses with strict academic requirements.

If you have decided to pursue a career as a lawyer, then, keep reading to discover how many years you need to spend to acquire a degree in it.
Number of years it takes to obtain a law degree in Nigeria
For most Nigerian Universities, before you obtain a degree in law, you must spend a minimum of 6 years.
You will, first of all, spend five years of study at an undergraduate school, then one year of practical training at the Nigerian Law school.
You must have it in mind that we have not included the compulsory one year of National Youth Service Corp, as it is not an academic requirement.
Also, you must bear it in mind that some Law courses may require just 4 years of study and 1 year of Nigerian Law school training.
Anyone who has obtained a University degree in law and wants to practice as lawyers in Nigeria must first attend the Nigerian Law School.
All students who pass the NLS examinations will be called to the Bar afterward. And after that, they’ll have to partake in the compulsory one year of NYSC.
