Man dies of COVID-19 next day after apologising for breaking distancing rule just once

A Californian man, Thomas Macias, has died of COVID-19 after breaking social distancing rule just once to attend a barbecue party.

A friend who’d also attended contacted Macias to say they’d tested positive for Covid-19.

He then took the test on June 16 and received a positive result two days later.

Reacting to it, he took to his social media page to call himself an ‘idiot’ for the mistake he made, which he said put his family health in jeopardy.

“I went out a couple of weeks ago … because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family’s health in jeopardy,” he wrote. “This has been a very painful experience. This is no joke. If you have to go out, wear a mask, and practice social distancing. … Hopefully, with God’s help, I’ll be able to survive this,” he wrote.

CNN reports that he died just one day after posting the message on social media.

Macias who worked as a truck driver suffered from diabetes and was plus size, making him especially vulnerable to the virus.

According to doctors, people with underlying conditions such as diabetes, chronic lung disease and asthma struggle more to survive from the deadly virus.

According to Macias’ brother-in-law, Gustavo Lopez, who spoke with CNN, he had been observing the social distancing rule until the state lifted the restrictions. It was then he decided to visit his friends, which turned out to be an unfortunate decision.

Macias got tested on June 15, got his positive result June 18 and died June 21. The Riverside County Office of Vital Records confirmed that he died of coronavirus.
