Man drowns after jumping into Canal to ‘escape arrest’ in Festac, Lagos

A young man has drowned after jumping into a canal in Amuwo-Odofin, Festac waterside, Lagos State while trying to evade arrest.

He was rescued from the water but didn’t survive.

According to Instablog9ja, he was allegedly being chased by some NDLEA officers, on Sunday, June 14, 2020.

Eyewitnesses claimed the NDLEA officers went there to arrest a man selling schoochies and monkey tail.

Upon spotting the officers, everyone at the shop, including the deceased, took to their heels.

In an attempt to evade arrest, three of them jumped into the canal. Two of them were subsequently rescued; however, the deceased didn’t make it out alive.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA officers allegedly fled immediately they realized what happened.

“They had to release the man they came to arrest, for him to rescue the boys and some people came to assist him but unfortunately this particular boy passed out.

“Out of anger, the youth attacked the NDLEA officers, who resorted to shooting. A boy ended up being shot and has been taken to the police station, Festac division,” Instablog quoted a source as saying.
