Popular Nigerian singer, Di’Ja has spoken against child marriage via a series of tweets she shared on her official handle.
Child marriage is predominant in the northern part of Nigeria where Di’Ja hails from. It is no surprise to see her lending her voice in the movement to end child marriage.
The mum-of-three demanded that women be allowed to grow up before marriage and procreation.
She wrote: “Our young girls need to be allowed to grow up before doing grown man and women things like marriage and anything to do with sexual reproduction. If you really mean well you will at least give her until 18 years old, while honestly guiding her spirit. Not everyone means well.”
She also used the opportunity to create awareness for Obstetric Fistula, which is very high in girls subjected to early marriages.
What’s Obstetric fistula?
Obstetric fistula is a medical condition in which a hole develops in the birth canal as a result of childbirth.
This can be between the vagina and rectum, ureter, or bladder. It can result in incontinence of urine or feces. Complications may include depression, infertility, and social isolation.
