One of our readers recently sent us an email asking: ‘how many universities are in Nigeria?‘. As a result, we decided to provide an accurate figure to as many others who are interested in knowing the answer to that question.
Nigeria is a country of over 200 million people. And expectedly, there are several universities available to accommodate the millions of youths seeking admission annually.
Whether or not you are interested in registering for JAMB this year, you should at least have a clue on the number of institutions of higher learning available in Nigeria.
How many universities are in Nigeria?
Presently Nigeria has 43 Federal Universities, 52 State Universities, and 79 Private Universities; making it a total of 174 universities in Nigeria.
To put it simply, there are exactly 174 universities in Nigeria right now [as gathered from the official website of the National University Commissions (NUC)]
However, these figures change almost every year, as some universities lose their accreditation while some gain accreditation.
Although there are hundreds of universities in Nigeria, it is not all of them that are accredited by the NUC. Another problem is, some accredited universities may have unaccredited courses on offer. Therefore, it is very important to know the list of NUC accredited universities in Nigeria.
Graduating from an unaccredited university (or fake university, as some prefer to call it), will amount to a waste of precious time and money, which I believe is what nobody wants to fall victim to.
