Niyi Abegunde has landed in police net in the capital of Oyo State, Ibadan for the alleged murder of a 69-year-old retiree. According to a police source, the killer had discovered the woman had over N2 million in her bank account before carrying out the heinous plot and disappearing with her ATM Card.
The victim, Grace Ajibola, was a lady evangelist at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Imole, Agbeni, Ibadan.
The late woman engaged the services of the painter in November 2019 and from then he became a family friend. According to reports, she used to send him on errands using her car.
Unfortunately, she one day sent him to help her withdraw some amounts from her account. But upon the completion of the withdrawal, Niyi discovered she had over N2 Million naira in her account.
From then, he plotted to kill the old woman since he knew her ATM PIN and could easily withdraw her money.
On March 17, Niyi showed up her house after making sure the young girl living with the woman had gone to school. He then strangled her to death, locked the door of the house and made away with her ATM card, phone and other valuables.
He withdrew about N120,000 from the account before policemen caught up with him at his hideout in Akure, Ondo State on March 25.
The crime reportedly took place at the Johnson Awe area of Oluyole Estate where the woman had been living since 1975, according to Nigerian Tribune which first reported the case.
The suspect is currently in police custody, according to a senior police source who did not want his name mentioned.
