On Friday, the 7th of February 2020, Pakistan’s parliament voted in support of a non-binding decision calling for the public hanging of felons convicted of the sexual abuse of children.
More than half of the assembly members of the Pakistan Parliament voted in favour of the resolution, which is not legally binding.
The resolution supports the public hanging of criminals charged with sexual abuse of children.
After presenting the resolution in the National Assembly, Ali Mohamed Khan, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs said;
“Those who commit crimes against children deserve no mercy they should be hanged in the middle of the cities.’’
In addition to that, he stated that “The hanging will act as deterrence for others,’’
Until 2014, Pakistan had an unofficial halt on the death penalty,
However, the ban was lifted for people convicted of terrorism.
That is after Taliban gunmen killed almost 150 children at an army-run school in the northwestern town of Peshawar.
So since then, About 400 convicts on death row have been hanged.
In any case, in recent years, there has been a rapid increase in sexual crimes against children in Pakistan, but punishments are uncommon.
However, Taimur Kamal, a Rights activist said the lawmakers went too far with their demands for public hanging
He stated that “Anger against abusers is understandable, but seeking death for that is also not a solution.’’
