President Donald Trump has come to the defence of American Police, amid the outcry for reform following the murders of George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks.
Rayshard Brooks was gunned down by an Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfem, who has now been charged with felony murder on Wednesday, June 17.
According to Prosecutors, Brooks posed no threat when he was gunned down. After shooting him twice, the white officer kicked him while he was on the floor and offered no medical treatment as he laid dying on the ground.
However, Trump insisted that the police has not been treated fairly as no one should “resist a police officer”.
The president who offered an interview with Fox News says he hopes the officer charged with felony murder gets ‘a fair shake’ at his trial.
“I don’t know that I would have necessarily believed that, but I will tell you, that’s a very interesting thing and maybe that’s so.
“They are going to have to find out. It’s up to justice right now. It’s going to be up to justice.
“I hope he gets a fair shake because police have not been treated fairly in our country. They have not been treated fairly.”
He had previously made a press statement in which he described the police officers using excessive force as “very tiny. “I use the word tiny,” he said.
“It’s a very small percentage. But nobody wants to get rid of them more than the really good and great police officers.”
Further, he announced that he was taking executive action to encourage police to adopt the “highest and the strongest” professional standards “to deliver a future of safety and security for Americans of every race, religion, colour and creed.”
