Ronaldinho arrested for allegedly entering Paraguay with a fake passport

According to reports, Brazil football legend, Ronaldinho, has been arrested in Paraguay.

He allegedly entered the South American country along with his brother with a fake passport. 

The 39-year-old together with his brother, Roberto de Assis, 49, was detained in the Resort Yacht & Golf Club Paraguayo on Wednesday night.

The Ministry of Interior of Paraguay has confirmed the report.

Speaking about the arrest, Paraguay’s interior minister, Euclides Acevedo told local radio station AM 1080 that “Mr Ronaldinho has a false passport.”

He said: “That is a crime and that’s why his arrest has been ordered.”

“I respect his sports popularity, but the law needs to be respected no matter who you are,” Acevedo said.

He went on to state that an investigation was “ongoing”, noting that additional information will be provided to the public at a press conference on Thursday morning, local time.

According to La Nacionpassports with Paraguayan nationality and bearing the names of Ronaldinho and Roberto were found in the hotel.

In 2015, the duo was convicted for constructing an illegal fishing trap at a reserved lake area with no proper license issued.

As a result, they were convicted; their Brazilian passports seized in 2018 and a fine of $8.5 million.

So, the former Barcelona player is currently without a Brazilian passport.
