Shi’ites stage protest in Abuja demanding El-Zakzaky’s release and medical attention (video)

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Monday, 6 July, staged a protest in Abuja demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife.

Many of them held placards with the text “Free Zakzaky” and chanted those exact words.

According to the Nation, the 15-minute protest started at around 3:00 pm from Wuse Zone 3 Under the Bridge and stopped at Wuse Market.

Meanwhile, no police confrontation was reported, as has been the lot of previous protests.

They have vowed to continue in their protest until their leader is released from the arrest.

Sheikh al-Zakzaky was injured and arrested along with his wife, in the 2015 Zaria massacre. The fight saw three of his remaining sons, as well as hundreds of his followers, killed by the Nigerian Army.

On January 16, 2017, Amnesty International wrote a piece saying “Nigerian authorities must immediately comply with a High Court order and release Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife from detention.”

Zakzaky has nevertheless remained in detention ever since.
