Anatomy/Human Anatomy is a Medical/Health Science course. If you’re an aspiring anatomist, one of the very first steps to take is to know the basic requirements for admission at the various universities where the course is offered.

In general, the O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for Anatomy/Human Anatomy are similar for most universities. It is, nevertheless, momentous to know the waivers for all the universities before completing your JAMB registration.

Anatomy/Human Anatomy requirements

‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)

To be eligible for admission to study Anatomy/Human Anatomy, you must score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include Chemistry, English Language, Biology, Mathematics, and Physics.

To put it differently, the ‘O’ level (NABTEB, NECO or WAEC) subject combination for Anatomy/Human Anatomy is English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, plus Biology.

Take note that your overall grade must not be below five credits in at most 2 sittings combined.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements

  • The University of Maiduguri accepts Mathematics in lieu of Physics.
  • The University of Calabar requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Ebonyi State University accepts only one sitting.

JAMB UTME subject combination

In addition to the compulsory Use Of English, the JAMB subject combination for Anatomy/Human Anatomy is Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry or Physics.

Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination

  • BSU, UNIZIK, EBSU, ABU, BENIN, CALABAR, ILORIN and PHC require Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • ABUAD accepts Physics, Chemistry and Biology OR Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
  • OOU accepts any three of Physics/ Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology.
  • BABCOCK accepts any three of Physics, Chemistry Biology and Mathematics

Direct Entry Requirement

Candidates who want to apply for Direct Entry admission into Anatomy or Human Anatomy need two ‘A’ level passes chosen from Physics, Chemistry or Biology, in addition to the UTME requirements.

Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students

  • The University of Calabar and UNIPORT do not offer direct entry.
  • LAUTECH accepts GCE ‘A’ Level or its equivalent with good passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics /ND with Upper Credit in a related discipline (plus UTME requirements) may be considered for admission into 200 level.
  • EBSU accepts B.Sc 2nd Class Upper Division in any Biological Science course Plus at least credit pass in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in one sitting.
  • BENIN requires three GCE (A/L) in Biology/Zoology, Chemistry and Physics plus the O’ Level credit in five other subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

JAMB cut off mark for Anatomy/Human Anatomy

Generally, Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for Anatomy or Human Anatomy if they score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME.

Note that 180 is not the standard cut off mark, as JAMB changes that every year with respect to the performance of students for that year.

Anatomy is the branch of natural science concerned with the study of the structure of organisms and their parts. Human anatomy, on the other hand, focuses solely on the structure and parts of humans.

How competitive is Anatomy at Nigerian Universities?

Human Anatomy is competitive, but not as competitive as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Medicine & Surgery, etc. Nevertheless, as a health science course that it is, it is important to score high in JAMB and post UTME in order to stand a good chance of gaining admission.

How many years does it take to study Anatomy/Human Anatomy in Nigeria?

All things being equal, it takes approximately 4 years to obtain a degree in Anatomy or Human Anatomy.
