EPL On-hold: Premier League Suspended Over Coronavirus

Published on

Following the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus across countries of the world, many activities are being postponed.

Not less than four clubs in the EPL have reported that their players have shown symptoms of the deadly novel coronavirus.

Just a few hours after UEFA took to their official Twitter handle to announce that all UEFA games have been suspended, the EPL has followed suit.

They made the announcement in an official statement via their website.

Not less than four clubs in the EPL have reported that their players have shown symptoms of the deadly novel coronavirus.

Among the four clubs are Watford, Leicester, Everton and Bournemouth, while Chelsea and Arsenal have confirmed two cases of the virus.

Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta have both tested positive for the deadly disease.

Following these reports of symptoms and confirmed cases, Everton and Bournemouth joined Arsenal, Chelsea, Watford and Leicester in putting their squads into self-isolation today.

Premier League chiefs have been severely pressurized to suspend or even cancel this current season as a measure to curb the spread of the disease just as others have done.

Just before the news of Arsenal’s head coach being positive with the virus broke out yesterday, the Premier League released a statement, that it’d continue business as usual

The news of his status led to Arsenal’s match with Brighton being postponed sending the whole squad into isolation and the training ground closed.

In the same vane, Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi had tested positive for the virus.

These recent events led to top-flight influence peddlers responding by calling an emergency club meeting this morning via video conference to evaluate the swiftly growing situation and decided to suspend all top-flight football.

However, the meeting of Shareholders today resulted in a decision to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on the 4th of April, depending on medical advice and conditions at the time.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

“In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority,” he said.

During that meeting, Everton announced that their entire squad had gone into self-isolation after an unnamed player showed symptoms.

Also, Bournemouth placed Artur Boruc and four members of staff under isolation after exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

With speculations rising that UEFA will postpone the upcoming Euro 2020 for at least 12 months, and seeing that the current season in EPL is bound to be extended, the EPL may decide to play their remaining games for this season during the extended window.

In another news, All Champions League games and Europa League matches have been suspended as announced by Uefa on Friday morning.

They include Man City’s match with Real Madrid; Chelsea’s game at Bayern Munich as well as Manchester United’s return leg with LASK.

“Following a meeting of Shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on 4 April, subject to medical advice and conditions at the time.”

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: ‘Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

‘In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority.’

“Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League’s aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so.

In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.”
