Housemanship in Nigeria: Duration, Salary & All You Should Know

Published on

In this post, we’ll discuss the number of years it takes to complete Housemanship in Nigeria. Also, we’ll share information on the average salary interns earn.

After graduating from Med School, whether at a foreign institution or one of the Nigerian universities where it is offered, you must undergo Housemanship before they can obtain full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Housemanship is an internship programme that involves clinical training in all Medical & Surgical specialities. This include but is not limited to Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Dentistry.

At the place of Internship, House Officers will be expected to put into practice everything they learnt in Medical school. This will be done under the supervision of qualified doctors and instructors.

How long does it take to do Housemanship in Nigeria?

Housemanship is a one-year period in most Nigerian hospitals. But it doesn’t stop there. After completing the housemanship, doctors have to complete a one-year program in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).

During NYSC, doctors need a provisional license from MDCN to practice.

Of course, the one year of NYSC is optional if you’re above the age of 30. Anyone above 30 simply has to apply for an exemption.

How much do interns earn per month?

According to several reports and testaments, house officers earn within the range of 100,000 to 200,000. This, of course, depends on the organisation the doctor finds himself/herself.

However, some doctors may find getting paid internship opportunities difficult, thereby opting to work at approved internship centres without pay.

Indeed, nobody loves to work without pay. However, some doctors end up finding their hands tied since they don’t want any delay whatsoever.

During graduation, most universities sensitize their young doctors by providing them with a list of health centres licensed to conduct housemanship.

It is imperative to start an early search in order to get a favourable option. Meanwhile, you must have made proper inquiries so as to avoid ending up at a health centre without pay.

Notwithstanding, getting a good teaching hospital is better than monetary perks.
