The Federal Government of Nigeria is apparently trying to shut down the ongoing BBNaija 2020, citing fears of a possible spread of COVID-19 among housemates.

In a report by the cable, The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed ordered the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to take Big Brother Naija (BBN) off the air.

The fifth season of the show commenced on Sunday, July 19, the same day the housemates were unveiled.

Needless to say, BBNaija is one of the most watched TV programmes, in Nigeria. Therefore, it will hurt a lot of people to see it shut down.

On Wednesday, Armstrong Idachaba, who serves as the acting director-general of the NBC, told senior management members that Lai Mohammed ordered him to shutdown the show.

Apparently, Lai Mohammed is trying to shut down the show, but wants it to appears as an order from the NBC.

The Cable also stated that the Minister is trying to kick MultiChoice Ltd, producers of the show, out of Nigeria, The Cable stated

He is believed to have launched political moves against MultiChoice in order to pave the way for his main consultant to make a return to Pay TV after previously failing.

However, the NBC are somewhat reluctant to carry out his order, since the management of the show adopted all necessary safety measures before the show commenced.

The letter was sent on July 1, before the show began.

MultiChoice replied with detailed explanations on measures taken in collaboration with the Lagos state government, whose agency, Lagos State Safety Commission, gave the green light for the show.

In the event that the minister gets his way, fans in Nigeria will definitely be left with red faces.

It will be a big hit to the entertainment industry that is already taking a serious hit consequent of the coronavirus pandemic.
