21-year-old Isa Abdulkareem has been sentenced to death by hanging for robbery by an Ekiti State High Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant, Isa, perpetrated the crime of armed robbery contrary to Sec.(402)(2) of the Criminal Code Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State Nigeria.

Although he pleaded not guilty to the charges that were interpreted and read to him, Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde, the presiding Judge, still found him guilty.

Justice Oluwatoyin said: “I find the defendant guilty and convicted, he is sentenced to death by hanging and may the Lord have mercy on his soul”.

In the course of the robbery, the defendant was armed with dangerous weapons such as cutlass and gun. The robbery operation happened at Oke-Ureje, along Igirigiri Road, Ado Ekiti.

On the 19th of December 2016, he robbed one Adeya Olalekan of a sum of N74,000; Infinix Note 2 phones among others.

Again, on 23rd December of the same year, he robbed another person, Olomola Taiwo of two Techno Y6 phones and a sum of N110,000.

Vigilante members of the community were the ones who arrested the defendant during a vigilante exercise.

The defendant, Isa confessed to committing the offence when he was being interrogated.

He took security operatives to their den where they met and stored their ammunition and weapons.

Exhibits were recovered. The exhibits include locally made pistols, knives, four Dane guns and toy guns; charms and axe.

Also recovered were four Nokia phones, four Techno phones, masks, a cash sum of #10,000, cartridges among others.

In addition to presenting all the exhibits mentioned above, the prosecutor, Mr Gbemiga Adaramola called four witnesses and his confessional statements to the Police to prove his case.
