The daughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Nelson Mandela, Zindzi is dead. she died at the age of 59. 

Zindzi is the youngest daughter of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela. Her mother was an anti-apartheid activist.

Zindzi died in a Johannesburg hospital in South Africa in the early hours of Monday, 13th July, 2020.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has confirmed the news of her death.

Also, Zindzi Mandela’s son, Bambatha shared a photo of his mother with the caption “Rest in Peace”. 

She took up the position as South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark in 2015 – she was manning that post until her death.

Ms Mandela grew up at the height of the anti-apartheid struggle. She was 18 months old when her father, Nelson Mandela was sent to prison.

Her mother was also jailed frequently then, leaving her in the care of her elder sibling, Zenani.

In 1977, her mother Winnie was banished to Brandfort, in the then Orange Free State, and Zindzi moved with her.

She then moved to Swaziland and upon finishing high school, enrolled at the University of Cape Town for a law degree.

She and her sister soon became active spokespeople for their jailed parents.

She graduated in 1985 and in the same year, she was selected to read her father’s refusal speech after the then president PW Botha offered him conditional release from prison.

Zindzi has written poetry that has been published on several occasions. One of her works includes Black As I Am.

“This is untimely. She still had a role to play in the transformation of our own society and a bigger role to play even in the African National Congress (ANC),” said ANC spokesman Pule Mabe.

Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations, said: “Zindzi will not only be remembered as a daughter of our struggle heroes but as a struggle heroine in her own right.

After Zindzi’s death, Only two of Nelson Mandela’s six children are still alive: Zenani Dlamini, Zindzi’s sister and Pumla Makaziwe Mandela; a daughter from his first marriage, to Evelyn Mase.

The deceased leaves behind her husband and four children.
