Nigerians say sacking SARS officer involved in Tiyamiyu’s death not enough

According to The Punch, Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the dismissal of Olaniyi Ogunsoro.

Nevertheless, several Nigerians don’t think it’s enough.

Fair enough, the Nigeria police had no reason to sack him yet. After all, they initially expressed their support for him even before having a critical look into the incident.

However, another contrasting version of the incident emerged, leading to protests which subsequently forced the Nigeria Police to act.

Yesterday, the governor of Ogun State visited the family of the late Remo Star player.

He went there along with the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, Force Headquarters, Mr Ogunyonwon Peter.

Recall that the Inspector General of police had ordered Mr Ogunyonwon to take over the investigation.

Why did the police sack Olaniyi Ogunsoro?

Apparently, the police didn’t explain why they backtracked on their initial stance.

In the meantime, investigations are still ongoing and it’s still young to arrive at any conclusion.

But according to the late player’s dad, the operatives were not supposed to be on duty when the incident occurred. To put it differently, it was an ‘oversabi’ mission.

It’s not clear if that’s reason enough to dismiss him if he’s not indeed guilty of any other offence.

What are Nigerians saying?

Thousands of Nigerians have expressed their dissatisfaction at ‘just dismissal’.

As such, they are calling for more actions from the police.

Khamis Abiodun requsted that the police dismiss the “whole of SARS”.

According to Tolu Olumide, SARS has never intercepted any robbery but has intercepted countless young people’s lives. He also called for the whole Entity to be scrapped.

Dennis Ekwerre demanded that Olaniyi Ogunsoro be prosecuted.

According to Olu, if the best the Nigeria Police can do is dismissal, then Nigeria is suffering from something worse than coronavirus.

No doubt, several Nigerians are irate and have not been silent about it.

It remains to be seen how the police handles this case, as several eyes are on it.
