Early life

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike was born and Raised in Enugu State. But he is a native of Anambra State, which is a neighbouring state and another southeastern state.

The name “Phyno”, which is the short form of phenomenal, was given to him by his secondary school friend Emeka. 

Music career

He studied Public Administration at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu, and started benefiting financially from music during his second year in school.

But he had interest for music all along, even before IMT. In fact, he developed interest for music during his early days in the secondary school.

However, he didn’t start his music career as a singer; he chose to become a record producer at first.

Phyno started rapping in 2010 and relocated to Lagos the same year to further his music career.

He told the Nigerian Tribune that he raps in Igbo because he respects his culture and loves being natural. Although he primarily raps in Igbo, he combines a bit of English and Nigerian Pidgin in his music. 

His style of rap reminds us of Ni**aRaw who he later admitted is one of the few people he looks up to.

As a record producer, he has worked with artists such as Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, Bracket, J. Martins and Mr Raw.

In 2012, Phyno decided to fully pursue music as a singer and rapper, no more just as producer.

He started recording his debut album, No Guts No Glory, in that same 2012.

The debut album which features popular singers, including P-Square, Olamide, Flavour and many more, turned out to be a big hit.

In 2014, Phyno was rumored to have impregnated one Rita Edmond. But he debunked those claims during an interview with The Punch.

An image appearing to show Phyno kissing Kcee was another event that led to controversy.

The image went viral on social media, and had almost all his fans questioning his sexuality.

However, Phyno clarified himself in an interview by claiming the image was captured from a bad angle.
