WAEC news and update on Naijahomebased.com

Recently, we received a message from one of our readers asking: ‘how many subjects can a student register for in WAEC?’

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) conducts the biggest Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in West Africa.

Every year, thousands of students across the 16 West African countries register and sit for the exam.

In case you didn’t know, the large exam body has a minimum and maximum limit of subjects students can register for; however, it is not mandatory that they sit for all those exams.

We have received series of questions lately regarding WAEC registration. We consider those questions normal, since it is extremely important not to make any mistake during registration.

So, if you’re still wondering how many subjects are required for WAEC, then this guide is for you.

How many subjects can you register for in WAEC?

The minimum number of subject a student can register for in WAEC is eight (8), while the maximum number is nine (9).

However, the number of subjects you decide to sit for is your decision to make. Any exam you miss out from shall be indicated as ‘absent’ in your statement of result.

Our advice:

In most Nigerian universities, students are required to possess a minimum of five (5) credit passes in their WAEC result or any other approved SSCE result. And, in most cases, Mathematics and English are compulsory subjects.

Therefore, it is extremely important to sit for not less than 5 exams in your WAEC. In fact, we advise you sit for all the exams, except you have genuine reasons for skipping any.

Another point to note is that, whichever course you decide to apply for at any university has its own subject requirement. So, we advise you look at your JAMB brochure in order to know the compulsory subjects for the field you intend to further on.
