Biography, Early life & Education

Tiwa Savage was born in Ikeja, Lagos State. However, at age 11, she relocated with her family to London.

During her high school days, she played trombone in a local orchestra band.

At age 16, she got the chance to be a backup singer for the popular singers George Michael and Mary J. Blige

Tiwa also lent her vocal recordings to many stars musicians, like, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Emma Bunton, Andrea Bocelli, and the likes of them.

She had also performed on the same stage with the likes of 50 Cent, Eminem, Destiny’s Child, Robbie Williams, Sting.

The talented singer attended University of Kent in England where she graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

She also bagged a professional music degree from Berklee College of Music, Boston.

She once worked at The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Is Tiwa Savage married? Any kids?

The mother of one was once married to Tunji Balogun – “Tee Billz”. On 23rd November 2013, the couple did their traditional marriage at the Ark in Lekki.

One year later, their white wedding was held at the Armani Hotel in Dubai on the 26th of April 2014.

On 1st January 2015, Tiwa and Tunji declared openly that they were expecting their first baby. Subsequently, the couple had their son, Jamil on 28th April 2016.

Tunji, however, accused his wife of adultery and his mother-in-law of witchcraft.

During a 45-minute interview with This Day newspaper and Pulse Nigeria, Tiwa broadly addressed her husband’s prolonged social media posts regarding their marriage.

She refuted her husband’s adultery claims and went further to accuse him of financial recklessness, drug addiction and abandonment.

She also reiterated there that her marriage to him was over.

Career

Tiwa made her debut studio album “Once Upon a Time” was released on 3 July 2013 with seven other singles.

In 2009, Tiwa signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The deal enabled her write for Monica, Kat, Babyface, Fantasia and Mýa.

She has however, received merits for her contribution to Monica’s soul-tinged ballad “Catch Me”.

Her contribution with Fantasia on the song “Collard Greens & Cornbread” earned the American recording artist a Grammy nomination in 2010.

She wrote Deluna’s “Push Push”, featuring Akon and Jaicko’s “Oh Yeah”, featuring Snoop Dogg.

Tiwa has also performed background vocals on Whitney Houston’s album I Look to You in 2009.

Incited by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, Tiwa decided to move back to Nigeria. On reaching Nigeria, she signed with Mavin Records in 2012. She is no longer with Mavins Records.

She made her film debut “For Coloured Girls” with the likes of Joke Silva and Ireti Doyle. An adaptation of the American stage play. 

In June 2016, there were reports that Tiwa had signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation.

However, it was until 29th July 2016, that she made it official by confirming the deal through her Instagram account – This deal makes her the first Nigerian artist to be signed to the label. I

In July 2019, Tiwa featured on “Keys to the Kingdom”, a track she co-wrote for Beyoncé’s soundtrack album The Lion King, The Gift.

She featured on the track alongside Mr Eazi.

Tiwa Savage was included in the lineup of artists who performed at the 2019 Wireless Festival on 13th March.

On 2nd May 2019, Universal Music Group endorsed Tiwa Savage to a seven-year publishing and distribution deal.

She performed background vocals on “Èkó”, a slow-burning ballad from Coldplay’s eighth studio album ” Everday Life”.

In 2006, Tiwa participated in the UK edition of The X Factor. She made it to the 24th round. She was, However, evicted at round 12.

The Moe Musa-directed visuals for “Wanted” was released on 28 May 2014. It captured Tiwa Savage putting on a nude bodysuit and touching herself suggestively.

The video’s release sparked a huge public backlash across various social media platforms.

In January 2019, YouTube shut down the video for “One” following accusations of copyright violations.

However, Youtube restored it after as it can’t be traced back to a copyright violation, on 2 March 2019
