According to a statement released on the official Twitter handle of the organisation, the older people account for by far the highest number of casualties.

“3 out of every 5 Nigerians who die from #COVID19 are more than 50 years old,” Nigeria’s apex health organisation wrote.

As the nation reopens and many people are eager to back to their near-normal daily activities, the NCDC is warning people to take precautions in order to protect the lives of older people, as well as the younger people with weaker immunity.

“Take precautions to protect your older relatives by wearing a face mask in public, practicing hand/respiratory hygiene & maintaining a physical distance of 2 metres from others.”

So far, Nigeria has recorded 24,567 cases, with 565 deaths and 9,007 recoveries.

According to Wikipedia’s data, the global death toll from COVID-19 has now surpassed 500,000. Meanwhile, the infection toll has also risen above 10.3M.

On the other hand, the number of people who have recovered fully from the disease stands at 5.24 million.
