Discord as Senator proposes agency for repentant Boko Haram terrorists

A bill for the establishment of an agency for the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram sect has been introduced by the Nigerian senate.

Senator Ibrahim Gaidam on Thursday, February 20, 2020, proposed a bill for the establishment of a distinct agency.

The agency will see to the affairs of repentant Boko Haram members.

The Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi read the bill during plenary.

In any case, the bill sparked a lot of reaction from the lawmakers.

The bill seeks for the establishment of a national agency for repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

The agency will see to the educating, rehabilitating, de-radicalizing and integrating repentant insurgents back into the society.

The reading of the bill was greeted with a mixed reaction from the senators; however, it has passed first reading nonetheless.

It was put to a voice vote by Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy Senate President who presided over plenary.

In 2018, the federal government initiated an amnesty programme for repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

In spite of the widespread criticism that followed the initiation of the programme, it did not put an end to it.

You will recall that just recently, the federal government released about 1,400 Boko Haram suspects.

For over a decade now, Nigeria has been battling with the Boko Haram insurgency; however, there has been no significant progress.
