What is NUBAN?
The word NUBAN is an acronym which simply means Nigeria Uniform Bank Account Number. In other words, NUBAN is the same as bank account number.
This is inline with a decree from CBN, which compelled all banks in Nigeria to provide account numbers of not more than 10 digits.
Formerly, Nigerian banks had no account number format of any sort; all the banks had varying number of digits; some issued 12 digits account numbers while some issued as much as 15 digits.
Consequently, the CBN issued a decree to force all banks in Nigeria to issue account numbers of not more that 10-digit numbers to their customers.
So, regardless of your account type (savings, current, domiciliary, etc.), your account number must not be more than 10 digits. If it is less than or more than, then it’s wrong.
How to obtain your own NUBAN
To get a NUBAN account number, all you have to do is visit any of the banks in Nigeria. For instance, if you want a NUBAN from GTB, then you have to visit any GTB branch near you.
Afterwards, you’ll be given a form to fill and be asked to choose the account type.
You many be required to produce some documents, including birth certificate, state of origin, ID card, etc. This varies from bank to bank.
Actually, some banks allow you to open a preliminary account by just dialing the unique USSD banking code associated to them, after which you’ll get your unique 10-digit NUBAN.
How to retrieve forgotten NUBAN number
Basically, all banks in Nigeria provide several easy means for customers to recover their misplaced / forgotten NUBAN. For some, all you have to do is dial a simple USSD code the mobile phone number linked to your bank account number.
If you’re not sure what the USSD code for checking your account number is, all you have to do is carry out a simple Google Search.
Alternatively, visit the closest branch of the bank you have an account with and complain to the customer care representative that you’ve forgotten your account number.
You may be asked to provide the following information:
- Full name
- Phone number linked to your Wema bank account
- Next of kin
